THE LOOKADOO LETTERS

Following is an extract of letters written by Miss Janie Lookadoo, Shelby, NC, R.F.D. #4, to her cousin, Mrs. E.A. Bowen (Mrs. E.A. Deaton; Mrs. E.A. Fowler) at Gastonia, NC in the year 1904. They were furnished to me by Mrs. E.A. Fowler of 488 S. Church Street, Spartansburg, SC in May 1931.

12 April 1904 - Mrs. E. A. Bowen

Dear Cousin,

...papa can not get old Uncle William Gardner's age. I don't think there ia any one about here that knows anything about this. Papa would give his age if he could. If old Uncle Lewis Gardner was living he might give his age. He knew more about him than any of the Gardners for he was very old when he died, and he has been dead for a long time. I hope you and Sallie will get the money from England. Tell Sallie I think she could write me some time. I guess Jethro and Arrie are getting most grown. I will close. Please write soon.

Your Cousin,

Janie Lookadoo

Shelby, NC, R.F.D. No. 4

20 April 1904 - Mrs. E. A. Deaton

Dear Cousin,

I went to Aunt Mary Jane's and looked in that book. There was not much in it that will be of benefit to you. I wrote off one piece, all there was about the Gardners. I sent it on a separate piece of paper. I don't know if it will do you any good or not.

Your Cousin,

Janie Lookadoo

[Note: On a separate sheet of paper enclosed in this letter is the following written in the hand-writing of Janie Lookadoo.]

...Specimen of extract from advertisement next of kin: "Clarkson-Gardner: Wanted relative of Hannah Clarkson daughter of Joseph and Hannah Clarkson. She married Rev. William Gardner of CHelsea 1750-1760. Apply to the London Times."

4 May 1904 - Mrs. E. A. Bowen

Dear Cousin,

Uncle Lewis Gardner was our grandpa's father's brother. Papa could not go to Shelby today for it is raining here this morning, and he had to go to Uncle Francis to find out about Uncle Lewis. Grandma was there and me and papa was not certain. If there is anything more you want to know, if I can find out for you, I will do so.

Your cousin,

Janie Lookadoo

5 May, 1904 - Mrs. E. A. Bowen

Dear Cousin,

Grandma came home this morning and I have been getting all the information that I can about old Uncle William Gardner and his heirs. Grandma does not know how many children old Uncle William Gardner had, ...(all) he had that she knows of his name was Thomas. Uncle Lewis was brothers, and their father's name was Thomas, and his father's name was William, the one who came from old England. As our grandpa father and Uncle Lewis... it would be hard to get the names of all their heirs, and Rebecca and Aunt Elizabeth never married. I think old Aunt Elizabeth is living, if she has died I have not heard it. Old Uncle William Gardner that came from old England was our grandpa's great great grandfather. Papa said if he knew were he could get any more information for you he would do so, but he don't know where he could get any more. I have tried to write this so you can read it, but my pen is not much good. I will close. Write soon.

Your cousin,

Janie Lookadoo

1 July 1904, 1904 - Mrs. E. A. Bowen

Dear Cousin,

I don't know what time old Uncle William Gardner came to this country, and grandma don't know how many Children he had, some of his grandchildren left North Carolina, one of them had one child when they left here and she don't now any more about them, them that did not leave are scattered about as it would be hard to get their names. I could get a few of their names if it would help you any. Our grandpa married Ann McCombs. Our grandma will be eighty years old the 20th of October. You said that we would all have to agree to give part of the money to get it. I would certainly be willing to give part of mine if I could get it. If I was well I could get up several of the heirs names for you, but I have not been away from home in nearly a year. So you know I can't do much...

Your cousin,

Janie Lookadoo
